Wisconsin high school student athletes can now engage in nIL deals
Wisconsin high school student athletes will soon be able to participate in name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) has approved a new rule allowing this, joining states like Illinois, Minnesota, and Missouri.
However, there are restrictions. NIL deals must not be linked to the student’s school team, or any school logos, and endorsements cannot feature the school uniform. Certain products, such as alcohol and gambling, cannot be included in the deals. Compensation must not relate to a student’s athletic performance, and students cannot miss practices or competitions for NIL activities. Additionally, hiring agents is not allowed, and schools cannot aid in these deals.
The WIAA also mandated that spectators ejected for unsportsmanlike behavior must complete an online sportsmanship course to return to games.
