NCAA approves rule changes contingent on a pending House settlement
The NCAA’s Division I board of directors approved changes that will begin if a settlement is granted. They conditionally agreed to eliminate over 150 rules. The preliminary settlement was approved by a federal judge in October and is expected to be finalized soon, although some issues like roster limits remain unresolved.
If approved, the settlement would address lawsuits about athlete compensation and the challenges since name, image, and likeness deals began in 2021. Key points of the settlement include allowing schools to share up to $20. 5 million in revenue with athletes starting in the 2025-26 school year, creating a clearinghouse for NIL deals to assess fair market value, and ending scholarship limits while imposing roster limits.
The settlement is set to take effect on July 1 if approved. The board also conditionally removed rules that obstruct revenue sharing but did not address player eligibility issues.
